K. Michael Cummings, Ph.D., is Chairman of the Department of Health Behavior in the division of Cancer Prevention and Population Science at Roswell Park Cancer Center, Buffalo, NY. He is also director of the Smoking Control Program at Roswell Park and conducts regular clinics for smokers seeking help in quitting. He has researched the behavioral factors that relate to smoking behavior, as well as how marketing influences smoking behavior. His current primary area of research is in the area of tobacco company documents, for which he is the recipient of four grants, including two from the National Cancer Institute. He uses his research in tobacco documents to inform his work on marketing influences and instructs others in the public health community on his findings as they relate to tobacco control and cancer prevention.
Dr. Cummings testified concerning the marketing assumptions of Philip Morris, smoker perceptions of light and low-tar cigarettes, and Philip Morris’ response to consumers’ health concerns.
